Margery Goodall didn’t start out to collect textiles, and that is reflected in this exhibition, which draws on four decades of interest in textiles.

Images, clockwise from top left: Margery with some of her textile works; Endangered Smoky Eremophila; Chaos Order; Riding on a Sheep's Back (supplied).

Margery has selected pieces made by artists who are serious about what they do, and all the works reflect a moment in time; they are tangible reminders of time Margery has spent with their makers. There is no overall theme, but all are works that she loves.

The selection began with two pieces from 1985 - a purchase by Margery’s husband, John, of a contemporary machine embroidery piece made by Alison Schwabe; and a small colourful patchwork quilt sewn from 1970s fabrics, one of Margery’s earliest finished wall quilts. These early pieces are bookended by a small wall hanging made late in 2024 by Australian textile master maker, Marjorie Coleman, exhibited for the first time in “40”; and one of Margery’s own recent works made from unconventional materials.

"40 - four decades of textile collection and creating” will be opened by Gail Hawes, Collections Manager for The Embroiders Guild of WA, whose personal textile collection contains hundreds of pieces from around the world.
