The exhibition title: Urban Ma refers to 'Ma' the Japanese word for the spaces in between, a word that does not have an equivalent in English.
Jill, Sue, and Jodie's work reflects 'ma' - "the complex network of relationships between people, space and objects" described by author Derrick de Kerckhove.
Jillian Ciemitis
Western Australian photographer and printmaker Jillian Ciemitis, Bachelor of Contemporary Arts in Visual Arts and Photomedia (Edith Cowan University), is a multi-award winning artist, notably in the WA Print Media Award (2012), and twice finalist in the prestigious national Fremantle Art Centre Print Award.
Jillian's work examines identity and place: the condition of the individual through both documented and invented narratives, which she extends further by transposition on her environmental and urban imagery. Jillian’s pieces are imbued with atmosphere and intensity, which is applied to a range of subject matters - the banal, the incidental, and the secret.
Jillian’s international projects include the 2017 Venice Biennale Collateral Program, the 18th Asian Art Biennale in Bangladesh, the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Art, the G20 Summit International Art Exhibition in Hangzhou, China, and recently the Southern Vermont Art Center, USA. Her artwork is included in Australian and international permanent collections, from Edith Cowan University’s art collection, Australia to Qianjang International Art Museum, China and various others.

Sue Hibbert
Internationally exhibited and multi award-winning artist Sue Hibbert examines the urban condition through inventive watercolour media.
Sue subverts traditional impressionism in the urban context, offering fragmented shards of form and image which, according to the art critic Ted Snell, exhibits a “brevity and bravura … depict(ing) the movement of light and dynamism”.
Published both internationally and nationally, Sue’s work has been featured in six solo exhibitions in the last decade, and 30 select and curated group shows across Australia and in Italy, including the prestigious AIA International Watercolour Exhibitions in Alessandria, and also Menaggio.
In addition to her own practice, Sue is a passionate and sought-after educator, facilitating teaching in watercolour and plein air methods and concepts. Sue has taught classes for over 20 years: at Ellis House, Beaufort Street Community Centre, and Tresillian Art Centre, as well as two dozen art-tour workshops or guest demonstrator talks both overseas and in Western Australia.

Jodie Holwill
Perth photographer Jodie Holwill received her first camera at the age of 10 and began capturing moments during family holidays. She was drawn to composition and thoughtful explorations of perspective and meaning. Jodie briefly studied photography in school art classes, and was told she had a “good eye,” though at the time she didn’t fully understand the significance of that observation. Over the years, Jodie's passion for photography deepened.
Jodie's distinctly human-centred photographic approach focuses on emotion, connection, and the subtle narratives that unfold within everyday scenes. Fascinated by how architecture holds the stories of those who use the space - each building, street, and corner carrying layers of human experience, Jodie often seeks to reveal those hidden stories in her photographs. Jodie not only captures structures, but the lives and memories embedded within them. Travel has taken Jodie to many places around the world, yet she continues to find inspiration in familiar streets and landscapes.
Jodie particularly enjoys participating in collective exhibitions, exhibiting her work alongside close friends, and internationally award-winning artists. Each exhibition is an opportunity to share her art, and to connect with people - an extension of her belief that photography is most powerful when it remains rooted in human experience and the spaces we inhabit.
