Introducing our Term 3 & 4 Artists in Residence - Susan Hoy & Chenoa Thrupp-Probst

Susan Hoy

1. Could you tell us a bit about yourself and your artistic background?

I have been drawing and painting for most of my life and have been exhibiting in both group and solo exhibitions over the last 20 years.  In 2020 I commenced a Bachelor of Arts at Edith Cowan University.  The plan to study visual art was side-tracked for a while in re-discovering a love of textiles and I graduated with a double major in Fashion and Visual Arts in November 2023.

2. What inspired you to apply for the artist-in-residence program here?

A residency allows time and space to work, and I am looking forward to getting to know Inglewood, as it is a different kind of suburbia from my home in the northern coastal suburb of Mindarie.

3. What specific projects or artwork do you hope to create or focus on during your time here?

I will be focussing on creating a series of paintings and surface pattern designs referencing Inglewood.

4. Are there any particular aspects of our community or environment that you find inspiring or that you are excited to explore through your art?

I enjoy the Art Deco architecture and motifs seen in Inglewood and I am looking forward to exploring these further.  The remaining ancient natural bushland of the Inglewood Triangle is a hidden treasure.  I intend to juxtapose these two aspects in my work.

5. How do you envision engaging with the local community during your residency? Are there specific ways you would like to collaborate or share your work with residents?

I would like to engage with both adults and children during my residency by way of workshops. Also, an artist talk, and perhaps a demonstration of some part of my art practice during the exhibition at the end of my residency.

6. What are your goals or outcomes that you hope to achieve by the end of your residency period?

My goal is to teach myself the techniques of creating repeating surface pattern designs, and then printing (either digitally or by hand) textiles for display alongside paintings for the final exhibition.

Chenoa Thrupp-Probst

Chenoa Thrupp Probst is an emerging feminist painter currently based In Boorloo/Perth. She has recently (2023) completed her Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in visual art at Edith Cowan University (ECU). With a love for colour and a passion for the female figure, Chenoa breaths vulnerability, liberation, love and power into her artistic practice. Chenoa's introspective approach challenges societies misogynistic expectations, questioning ideas surrounding the self, the subject and the object as well as looking to the environment and ideas surrounding climate change. Chenoa translates her experience into layers upon layers of interwoven colour.

During this residency Chenoa aims is to create a collection of abstracted painted works inspired by the intricacies of eucalyptus bark, exploring the subtleties of these magnificent native trees.
