Painting with Peter Campagna
As part of his residency with the Inglewood Arts Hub, Peter Campagna undertook a community engagement project. Peter described how he went about doing it:
"When considering a project that could benefit the community, as an AIR, I decided to offer my services to a group in need.
I contacted the City of Stirling and was directed to the City's community services coordinator, who shared my contact details.
Subsequently I was approached by a group from MercyCare that supports refugees, migrants, and new arrivals to Australia. I visited their office in Mirrabooka, where I met Jacqui, their senior officer. Together, we arranged for me to mentor a group of ten new Australians to complete a painting over a four-week period at the Inglewood Arts Hub".
Peter said, the goal of the project was to provide an enjoyable group activity to help the participants feel more connected and comfortable with their new community. In this, the project was successful. The group met each week, and Peter mentored the participants to create a painting of banksia flowers. The completed paintings will be exhibited at MercyCare in Mirrabooka.
IAH Volunteer, Sandra Jamieson, took the photos below and assisted Peter in the painting sessions in the IAH Workshop Studio.
