Interview with Ron Dagan

Ron is a Perth-based artist with a background in engineering and a passion for tools, Ron has always had a deep interest in art, a trait inherited from his family. To explore this passion, he turned to woodworking to combine technical skills with creative expression. He gradually focused on woodturning, finding it both soothing and mentally stimulating. Woodturning offers a therapeutic outlet where he loses track of time while crafting each piece. Furthermore, woodworking presents various avenues to explore such as intarsia, marquetry, and pyrography, independently or in conjunction with woodturning. Ron sees this as a lifelong journey that is just beginning.

Can you share a bit about your artistic journey and what inspired you to pursue an art career?

Having the opportunity to creatively express my thoughts and emotions, while also entering a state of flow where the boundaries of time and space disappear.

How would you describe your artistic style and the themes that often appear in your work?

I strive to merge the grace and organic beauty of woodturning with other art forms like pyrography and botanical art.

What mediums do you prefer to work with, and why do they hold a special significance for you?

My passion lies in working with wood, and I am dedicated to building a career in woodworking. This skill combines artistic expression with precise technical work, resonating with my core interests.

Can you walk us through your creative process, from the initial idea to the finished artwork?

To begin, everything originates from a concept. I conceive an idea in my mind and then embark on a process of searching and exploring until I achieve clarity and a solid concept. The subsequent crucial step involves drawing, where I frequently sketch a still-life representation of the wooden object or the embellishment design. Following this, I proceed to create the wooden piece.

Are there any specific artists or art movements that have influenced your work and shaped your artistic vision?

Any art that portrays still life and botanical subjects.

What emotions or messages do you aim to convey through your art, and how do you hope viewers will interpret your work?

Art is a space of tranquility and elegance for me, a zone where I hope the viewer can escape from the ordinary chores of life for a few moments and sink into a fantasy, letting go for a while.

How do you stay inspired and motivated as an artist, especially during times of creative block or self-doubt?

I aspire to continuously reinvent myself. Sometimes I tell myself that if I am unable to do woodturning and woodworking, I will draw. If I am not able to draw, I'll write. If I cannot write, I will speak. When I am unable to speak, I'll think. If I am not able to think, I am dead.

What challenges have you faced in your artistic career, and how have they impacted your growth and development as an artist?

From setting up a woodworking workshop to mastering woodturning, followed by grasping composition, proportions, flow, and elegance, I faced numerous challenges. Subsequently, I had to enhance my skills in drawing and pyrography.

Looking ahead, what are your goals and aspirations as an artist, and how do you envision your artistic practice evolving in the future?

I aim to specialize in artistic forms of woodworking, including intarsia and marquetry, either on their own or in combination with woodturning. Through this fusion of techniques, I aim to push the boundaries of woodworking, exploring new possibilities and creating unique pieces that resonate with both aesthetic appeal and technical mastery.
