Can you share a bit about your artistic journey and what inspired you to pursue an art career?

My journey into pursuing a career in art was sparked by a series of experiences that fueled my passion for creativity. I have been creating art for years, starting with fabric paintings turned into throw pillows and creating artwork for a guest house in Johannesburg, in my early 20's. Over time, I expanded my creativity by designing invitations and posters at work. In 2006, I moved to Asia and took a Photoshop course in Bangalore, India, creating digital designs and custom wall art. In Jakarta, Indonesia, from 2008, I had a studio where I was able to paint more. In 2011, I started a small creative design studio in Bangkok, Thailand selling personalised statement wall art, stationery, and city-inspired wall art and homewares at fairs and markets. Returning to Jakarta in 2017, I continued selling personalised digital art and paintings through various channels, including different Overseas Woman's Associations. We arrived in Perth in December 2023 and I'm now embarking on a new creative beginning...

How would you describe your artistic style and the themes that often appear in your work?

I see myself as having a creative artistic style that is adaptable across different skills. As a general "Jack of all trades" I have an innovative approach to art and I am not constrained by particular themes or color schemes. By combining traditional techniques with digital design tools, I explore a wide range of ideas and possibilities, creating contemporary pieces that blend abstract realism with elements of photographic collage.

What mediums do you prefer to work with, and why do they hold a special significance for you?

I experiment with acrylics, watercolors, inks, and monoprints, and I love incorporating digital manipulation in Photoshop to showcase my versatility and creativity as an artist. I believe that combining different mediums results in artwork that is visually appealing and conceptually rich.

Can you walk us through your creative process, from the initial idea to the finished artwork?

My creativity is fueled by a variety of sources, be it a pattern, a floral display, a portrait, scenic view, a feeling or a song. I utilise numerous photo references, including my own pictures and Free Stock images. By merging traditional methods with digital components, I can delve into a broad spectrum of concepts and possibilities. On occasion, I opt to not turn a digital piece into a painting, instead offering it as prints for sale, while at other times I transform digital designs into physical paintings. I also take pleasure in converting experimental works and playful studies in acrylic, watercolor, monoprints, and ink into digital art/prints. Alternatively, when I have a clear concept in mind, or just feel like creating an abstract, I produce final original pieces on paper, board, or canvas.

Are there any specific artists or art movements that have influenced your work and shaped your artistic vision?

I would say Abstract Expressionism: Which allows me the freedom of expression and gestural abstraction. However, this question is particularly challenging for me as I have a wide range of interests. I am passionate about various artistic styles and themes, making it difficult for me to choose just one. With my eclectic taste, I aim to explore and experiment with diverse mediums and styles and I follow/admire so many different artists that influence my work.

What emotions or messages do you aim to convey through your art, and how do you hope viewers will interpret your work?

The only thing I want is to produce art and designs that bring people the same happiness I felt while creating it.

Can you tell us about a particular piece of artwork that is especially meaningful to you, and explain the story behind its creation?

"Bloom Wildly". 127x100cm Acrylic/Mixed media on canvas (SOLD). I'm still not sure if the painting inspired the song or if it was the other way around but I this large piece has it's own soundtrack too ;-).

I wanna bloom wildly where do I start?

"From a quiet place in my heart

Breaking through the barriers

Tearing them apart

Fear won’t hold me back

Or keep me down

My spirit will rise up

Wearing victory like a crown" ~ Wordsby.Adele

How do you stay inspired and motivated as an artist, especially during times of creative block or self-doubt?

Self-doubt is very real, and sometimes I do ask myself if I am just "faking it till I make it" or if I even really care if I make it (whatever "making it" might mean). I think I have decided that I am happy to simply "JUST CREATE". I also remind myself that it's all about the journey, and not the destination and that sometimes you have to just LET GO and SEE what happens.

What challenges have you faced in your artistic career, and how have they impacted your growth and development as an artist?

Despite facing challenges such as frequent relocations and the lack of a permanent studio for painting, I have found that the key is to keep creating. Whether it's designing patterns on Procreate, working on digital designs for tea towels and cushions, creating digital artwork for prints, making small playful studies on paper, painting large canvases, or picking up the guitar and writing a song, inspiration always finds its way to me. I am constantly searching for new ideas and sources of inspiration for my next project, and I am always on the lookout for opportunities to collaborate.

Looking ahead, what are your goals and aspirations as an artist, and how do you envision your artistic practice evolving in the future?

I am eager to see what the creative future holds for me in Australia. My goal is to sell my artworks and homeware products.

One of my goals is to participate in art exhibitions, and I began by entering three pieces in the 2024 Incognito Art show. I was thrilled to discover that one of my pieces had been sold from a total of 18,000 artworks on display. *Artworks are still available on the Incognito website.

I was recently approved to sell prints on Bluethumb.au, which is a future milestone for me. Currently, I am working on setting up my BlueThumb profile and preparing prints for sale. I aspire to create more original artwork to sell on Bluethumb and to participate in more exhibitions next year.

Despite my initial reluctance due to the lack of large cohesive artworks or series of works, I decided to show some of my smaller pieces and prints to make my debut in the Perth exhibition scene at the Expressive Triad Exhibition.
