Artist, writer, and creative director, Basil Antonas, lives and works in Parkerville, Western Australia. He creates paintings with expression and movement, and explores tactile forms. He uses colour to capture a sense of place.
Tell us a bit about yourself I have been painting for around 20 years. I currently live in the Perth hills and paint every day – it’s very therapeutic.
Describe your studio or workspace
I have a pretty open space outside my studio being surrounded by nature. I get a lot of visits from curious parrots, magpies and quenda (bandicoots).
How has your career developed and evolved?
I like to experiment and continue learning from my mistakes.
I suppose I paint to surprise myself.
What does your work aim to say?
I aim to create authentic pieces that connect on a personal level – you could say I paint emotional landscapes.
Who (or what) are your biggest influences?
Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Kurt Vonnegut (yes, the writer).
What is your process
I collect, etch, shave, and sculpt used oil and acrylic paint materials (like depleted oil tubes) to compose fleeting abstracts on canvas or board - elevating excess and detritus to art.
These unique and temporary constructions are small enough to fit in the palm of my hand, but I photograph them and the change to grand scale alters the perception of - and celebrates - the material. I then produce limited-edition prints on sustainable archival cotton rag and they find permanence. Each print is created with the aim of a more sustainable art practice.
Each print comes with a signed, numbered and embossed certificate of authenticity.
Basil's artworks have been exhibited across WA and internationally.
His exhibition Undercurrents explores the emotions that lie beneath the surface of everyday life.
The pieces explore the breadth and depth of the human condition, with themes encompassing courage, hope, and the longing to connect.
