Janice Oliver
‘Home is more than a place— It’s a feeling, a sanctuary, and a collection of moments that shape our lives.’
Forty seconds, a short moment which shaped my life. On October 14, 1968 at 10:59am a 6.9 Richter scale earthquake rumbled through our Meckering homestead. Being six, becoming homeless seemed a bit of an adventure, freeing me from prior traumatic experiences.
Fast forward 55+ years and life has moved on, or has it? My body of work transports the viewer from ‘the ruins of my life’ in Meckering, to this ‘new place’ in Inglewood. Sharing my journey as an artist-in-residence since July at the Inglewood Arts Hub. Walks about Inglewood observing, noting, recording, photographing, meeting, greeting, and reflecting. Interacting with everyone visiting my studio and the community centre. Hearing stories, sharing hugs, laughter and tears. Observing the seasons and the weather as a farmer does!
This plethora of experiences have been transformed onto and into recycled home-made paper, and as a multitude of prints, artist books and photographs. Expect to see botanical dyed books, eco-etches, letterpress, collagraphs, photogravure, reduction, riso, cyanotype, relief and intaglio prints.
Janice at City Of South Perth Emerging Artist Awards, with her winning entry Come fly with me; Banksia reduction print.

Who(I)s Home in Inglewood - Working From Home
Down the rabbit hole again ... This time I’m considering the relationship between traditional kumara garden management in Polynesia and contemporary corporate work practices associated with working from home. A bit dystopian but rewarding exploration of a metaphor possibly stretched too thin. Parking your tent around the point of connection of two seemingly unconnected thoughts is always a productive place to be in contemporary visual art practice.
Explore this space with me through a gallery work that is part art installation, print making, and painting. All generated during my residency at the Inglewood Arts Hub.
